MRF HISTORY

MRF HISTORY: -

1946

- A young entrepreneur, K. M. Mammen Mappillai, opened a small toy
balloon manufacturing unit in a shed at Tiruvottiyur, Madras (now
Chennai).

1949

- Although the factory was just a small shed without any machines, a
variety of products, ranging from balloons and latex-cast squeaking
toys to industrial gloves and contraceptives, were produced. During
this time, MRF established its first office at 334, Thambu Chetty
Street, Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India.

1952

- MRF ventured into the manufacture of tread rubber. And with that,
the first machine, a rubber mill, was installed at the factory. This
step into tread-rubber manufacture, was later to catapult MRF into a
league that few had imagined possible.

- MRF soon became the only Indian-owned unit to manufacture the
superior extruded, non-blooming and cushion-backed tread-rubber,

MRF (Madras Rubber Factory)

Madras Rubber Factory: - Madras Rubber Factory, or MRF, is a major manufacturing company located in Chennai, India. MRF is mainly involved in making vehicle tyres. It is India's largest tyre manufacturing company, and among the dozen largest worldwide. It exports to more than 65 countries.

Dunlop Tyres

Dunlop Tyres: -

Dunlop Tyres is a British company owned 75% by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and 25% by Sumitomo Rubber Industries, which sells Dunlop branded road tyres in succession to the Dunlop Rubber Company.

In 1985, Dunlop Rubber was taken over by BTR plc, and Sumitomo acquired the rights to manufacture and market Dunlop branded road tyres. Sumitomo did not acquire any Dunlop company. In 1997 Sumitomo gained agreement to use the Dunlop name in its corporate name, and changed the name of its UK subsidiary to Dunlop Tyres Ltd[1].

In 1999 Sumitomo and Goodyear entered into a joint venture, by which Sumitomo continued to manufacture all Japanese-made tyres under the Dunlop name, while Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company bought 75% of the European and North American tyre businesses of Sumitomo [2][3].

The company has extensive manufacturing operations throughout the world. With the closure of the Washington plant in 2006, Goodyear Dunlop ceased mainstream car and lorry tyre production in the UK.

There is still a bespoke Motorsport manufacturing operation located on a corner of the original Fort Dunlop site in Erdington, Birmingham, opened in 1891. This factory supports specialised vintage, motorcycle and touring car tyre production, and produces around 300,000 specialised racing tyres per year which are then shipped all over the globe.

The main Birmingham site has been extensively redeveloped with a modern shopping centre (The Fort Shopping Centre), car dealerships and several logistics warehouses. The iconic former head office building is being redeveloped into a combined residential, office and hotel complex. This can be observed between junction 5 and 6 of the M6, on the east side of the motorway.

Goodyear Dunlop still occupy a compact part of the site with their British head office. In the UK, the company operates as a sales organisation importing tyres from manufacturing plants around the world, including China, Slovenia and Poland.

The company is in an extremely competitive sales environment and has had to continually readjust to this pressure. Apart from the main Goodyear and Dunlop brands, tyres are also sold under the Fulda, Sava and Arrowspeed brand names.

The Goodyear Dunlop joint venture is managed from sites in Luxembourg and Brussels, which in turn reports to Goodyear in Akron, Ohio.

Dunlop Tyres is the sole tyre supplier to British Touring Car Championship for 2003 to 2006 and the V8 Supercars Championship from 2002 to date. Dunlop also supplies tyres to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters and the American Le Mans Series.

Tyres

Tyres: -

In radials tyres the
ply or ply cords are alligned at 90 degrees to the circumference. While radials improve performance the fact is that they are not very good for bad roads and overloading. The suspension of a vehicle has, also, to be modified to accept radials. Radials offer much better grip of the road especially on surfaces which offer poor wheel traction like wet of slippery roads.

What do treads on tyres do?

Treads perform a variety of functions which includes increasing road grip, cooling the tyre while running at high speeds, forming an effect whereby tyres with deeper treads may not pick up loose pebbles and nails on the road, and providing a safe margin of rubber before the complete tyre wear out. In wet conditions they provide ducts through which the water is squeezed out. This in turn helps the tyre grip better.

Maintenance of Tyres

The single greatest cause of tyre damage is improper inflation, which result in unnecessary stress on them and also poor fuel average. Ensure that tyre pressure is always correct. At least once in every two weeks the tyre pressure should be checked and also when they are cold. Hot tyres will reflect wrong pressures and these will reduce once the tyre gets cold. Make sure the spare is always pressed up correctly, too.

Rotate tyres regularly, as per the owner’s manual. Remember that some tyres are designed only for uni-directional movement and others have specific front/rear location rolls. By and large on general vehicles, the tyre rotation pattern is criss-cross.

Taking out small stones and pebbles from the treads is also a must. As far as possible, overnight parking should be on hard surfaces. Waste or stagnant water on the streets is usually very corrosive and will eat through the sidewalls.

The best way to safeguard your tyres and give them a long life is by using your right foot carefully. Hard braking or sudden jerky racing starts finishes a tyre faster. Spinning the wheel is another disaster for tyres. Refrain from turning the front wheel while the vehicle is stationery. This also causes excessive wear.

Regular visual inspection is a must, both from inside and outside. Look for cracks, bulges, cuts and odd wear and tear. If you find uneven wear and tear, it may because of bad alignment. This can reduce tyre life drastically, as it causes irregular tyre wear. Avoid overloading of your vehicle. Never exceed the road limit of your vehicle.

What do the alpha-numerics on the side of the tyre denote?

Ordinary tyres will have rating like 5.65-12 (as in the Maruti 800). This means the actual cross section on the tyre (in inches) when mounted on the rim (5.65) and normal rim diameter in inches (12). You may also see other number which signify month and year of production, serial or batch number of production line and ply ratings, which simply implies stronger carrying strength.

Radial tyres are marked with numerals, for e.g. 145/70 R 13 T. This means that the 145 (MM) stands for tyre width, the ‘R’ stands for Radial. 70 (MM) is a profile on the sidewall of the tyre. This is the diameter of the wheel with the tyre minus the diameter of the rim. 13 (inch) is the diameter of the rim. The last alpha(T) signifies the permissible speed or performance rating of a particular tyre.

Cornering lamps

Cornering lamps: - On some models, white cornering lamps provide extra lateral illumination in the direction of an intended turn or lane change. These are actuated in conjunction with the turn signals, though they burn steadily, and they may also be wired to illuminate when the vehicle is shifted into reverse gear, such as on many Saabs and Corvettes. North American technical standards contain provisions for front cornering lamps as well as for rear cornering lamps. Cornering lamps have traditionally been prohibited under international ECE Regulations, though provisions have recently been made to allow them as long as they are only operable when the vehicle is travelling at less than 40 kilometres per hour (about 25 mph).

Front fog lamps

Front fog lamps: - Front fog lamps provide a wide, bar-shaped beam of light with a sharp cutoff at the top, and are generally aimed and mounted low.[10][11][12] They may be either white or selective yellow. They are intended for use at low speed to increase the illumination directed towards the road surface and verges in conditions of poor visibility due to rain, fog, dust or snow. As such, they are often most effectively used in place of dipped-beam headlamps, reducing the glareback from fog or falling snow, although the legality varies by jurisdiction of using front fog lamps without low beam headlamps.

Use of the front fog lamps when visibility is not seriously reduced is often prohibited (for example in the United Kingdom), as they can cause increased glare to other drivers, particularly in wet pavement conditions, as well as harming the driver's own vision due to excessive foreground illumination.[13]

The respective purposes of front fog lamps and driving lamps are often confused, due in part to the misconception that fog lamps are necessarily selective yellow, while any auxiliary lamp that makes white light is a driving lamp. Automakers and aftermarket parts and accessories suppliers frequently refer interchangeably to "fog lamps" and "driving lamps" (or "fog/driving lamps"). In most countries, weather conditions rarely necessitate the use of fog lamps, and there is no legal requirement for them, so their primary purpose is frequently cosmetic. They are often available as optional extras or only on higher trim levels of many cars. Studies have shown that in North America more people inappropriately use their fog lamps in dry weather than use them properly in poor weather.

Driving lamps

Driving lamps: - "Driving lamp" is a term deriving from the early days of nighttime driving, when it was relatively rare to encounter an opposing vehicle. Only on those occasions when opposing drivers passed each other would the dipped or "passing" beam be used. The full beam was therefore known as the driving beam, and this terminology is still found in international ECE Regulations, which do not distinguish between a vehicle's primary (mandatory) and auxiliary (optional) upper/driving beam lamps. The "driving beam" term has been supplanted in North American regulations by the functionally descriptive term auxiliary high-beam lamp. They are most notably fitted on rallying cars, and are occasionally fitted to production vehicles derived from or imitating such cars. They are common in countries with large stretches of unlit roads, or in regions such as the Nordic countries where the period of daylight is short during winter. Many countries regulate the installation and use of driving lamps. For example, in Russia each vehicle may have no more than three pairs of lights including the original-equipment items, and in Paraguay, auxiliary driving lamps must be off and covered with opaque material when the vehicle is circulating in urban areas.

Headlamps

Headlamps: - Forward illumination is provided by high- ("main", "full", "driving") and low- ( beam headlamps, which may be augmented by auxiliary fog lamps, driving lamps, and/or cornering lamps.

Dipped beam: - Dipped-beam (also called low, passing, or meeting beam) headlamps provide a light distribution to give adequate forward and lateral illumination without blinding other road users with excessive glare. This beam is specified for use whenever other vehicles are present ahead. The international ECE Regulations for headlamps specify a beam with a sharp, asymmetric cutoff preventing significant amounts of light from being cast into the eyes of drivers of preceding or oncoming cars. Control of glare is less strict in the North American SAE beam standard contained in FMVSS / CMVSS 108[5] .

Main beam: - Main-beam (also called high, driving, or full beam) headlamps provide an intense, centre-weighted distribution of light with no particular control of glare. Therefore, they are only suitable for use when alone on the road, as the glare they produce will dazzle other drivers. International ECE Regulations permit higher-intensity high-beam headlamps than are allowed under North American regulations

Automotive lighting

Automotive lighting: - The lighting system of a motor vehicle consists of lighting and signalling devices mounted or integrated to the front, sides and rear of the vehicle. The purpose of this system is to provide illumination for the driver to operate the vehicle safely after dark, to increase the conspicuity of the vehicle, and to display information about the vehicle's presence, position, size, direction of travel, and driver's intentions regarding direction and speed of travel.
